Kalevalaisen taruston veden emännän mukaan nimetty Vellamo on Pia Leinosen ja Joni Tialan luotsaama kokkolalainen folk–duo, jonka ilmaisussa sulaa suomalainen kansanlauluperinne viehättävään retroiluun, luoden taianomaisia nykyfolk–tunnelmia.
Kotimaan lisäksi Vellamo kiertää ulkomailla osan vuodesta: Tähän mennessä takana on seitsemän USA:n kiertuetta sekä pari Euroopan ja Uuden-Seelannin kiertuetta. Vellamo julkaisi Yhdysvalloissa äänitetyn, Euroopassakin hyviä arvioita keränneen esikoisalbuminsa alkuvuodesta 2013. Vellamon toinen albumi Trad julkaistiin kesällä 2014. Levy sisältää nimensä mukaisesti kansanmusiikkia suomalaisesta perinteestä raikkaalla folkrock-otteella tulkittuna. Levyllä soittavat myös basisti Janne Ylikorpi sekä rumpali Timo Tikkamäki. Samalla kokoonpanolla levytetty ja loppuvuodesta 2015 julkaistu kolmas albumi Koskenkylä koostuu omasta materiaalista ja vahvistaa yhtyeen transkontinentaalista nykyfolktyyliä.
”Koskenkylä” on täysin irti ajasta ja paikasta, jopa maasta. Perusvire on toki folkissa, mutta Vellamo on sävyttänyt jokaisen biisin omaksi pieneksi, eri tavalla hiotuksi helmeksi. Levyssä on jotain hippimäistä, kaavoista ja käytännöistä piittaamatonta. Niin sävellyksissä, tulkinnoissa kuin sanoituksissakin, joissa vuorottelevat suomi ja englanti. Leinonen ja Tiala toteuttavat samaa vapauden henkeä myös käytännössä: tällä hetkellä he kiertävät Yhdysvaltoja, soittavat kirjastoissa, kodeissa, baareissa, klubeilla – ihailtavan rohkeaa ja ennakkoluulotonta!

Vellamo is the performing and songwriting team of Pia Leinonen and Joni Tiala. Their music is reminiscent of 1960’s folk revival groups such as Richard and Mimi Farina; Peter, Paul, and Mary and Pentangle – but with a Scandinavian twist. It is characterized by haunting melodies, Pia’s ethereal lead vocals and Joni’s virtuosic guitar stylings. They write instantly memorable songs in English as well as their native Finnish, and also perform traditional ballads from the Finnish and Scandinavian folk traditions. They are known for establishing a rapport with any audience: The duo has been touring around Europe, in New Zealand and six times in the US. First album came out in early 2013, which was recorded in Vermont. In 2014 Vellamo released their second album, recorded with a full band. This folk-rock gem contains beautiful arrangements of traditional songs from the Finnish and Swedish traditions. Vellamo’s third album “Koskenkylä” (Whitewater Village) was released in November 2015. This modern Nordic folk album features all original material written both in English and Finnish.
